Fall 2021 Jeffrey Court Renovation Challenge: Week 1

What in the world have I gotten myself into? HA! Well, the cat’s out of the bag! I’m actually super pumped to be announcing that I have been chosen to participate in the Fall 2021 Jeffrey Court Renovation Challenge. To say I’m humbled, is an understatement. Still pinching myself. Over the next several weeks, myself and a crew of other talented designers will be renovating a variety of spaces using Jeffrey Court Tile as a major element of the design. Frog Tape and Wagner have also jumped in to sponsor this event, so be on the lookout for how I’ll be utilizing their products as well. We will all be competing for a $5000 prize! Yowza! This is where you come in! I’m gonna need your votes. Stay tuned for more on that next week. At this point, though, I’m going to be stoked to even finish!

Week 1 is demolition week! Sounds fun, right?! Unless the prior contractor completely muffed everything up. So I am calling this week, DISASTER/DISCOVERY week. Before we get into that, let’s check out some of the before pics.

Looks completely OK, right?! Well, if you’ve been following along on my renovation journey, you’ll know that I’m not cool with just OK. Every space in my home deserves to shine! Since the moment I saw this sad bathroom, I couldn’t wait for the day I could give it a fresh new face.

Here’s a little visual of some of the ideas that’ve been swirling around in my head. I’m really loving the idea of a contrasting grout to help the Jeffrey Court Aquamarine Blue Ceramic tile I selected really pop. You can expect a mural of some sort on the walls (right now I’m thinking something that will mimic marble). And the faucet has to be a fun pop of color. I can’t guarantee it will look this way in the end, as that’s not how my creative process usually works. Consider this the launch pad. You’ll have to tune in week by week to watch the metamorphosis.

Now...let’s talk about the disaster/discovery I mentioned before. From mold to a leaky toilet to absurd install of the tilebacker and so much more, this has been a super surprising demo. The bad thing about this is the process is taking much longer and much more strength than I had budgeted. The silver lining is that I’m learning more than I had ever imagined and crossing that finish line is going to be that much more satisfying. Oh...and I guess it’s pretty great that we’re dodging a major bullet by taking care of the damage now! Can you believe this bathroom was remodeled just a few years ago by a licensed contractor? Hmmmm….wonder why we try to DIY most projects?! If you think I’m exaggerating, take a look at some of the demo process.

I’m pumped for this project and I hope you are too! As always, I promise to take design risks, try new things, make mistakes and have lots of fun along the way. Let’s gooooooo!!!!
